Grey literature: from hidden to visible

Grey literature is information produced on all levels of government, academics, business and industry in electronic and print formats not controlled by commercial publishing i.e. where publishing is not the primary activity of the producing body. (Luxembourg, 1997 - Expanded in New York, 2004, on WWW: http://www.greynet.org/index.html) The role of grey literature in today society was well expressed by Vaska: “It is therefore remarkable how efforts over the past two decades have altered originally preconceived notions of grey literature, resulting in a deeper understanding of how the formation, retrieval, and use of non-traditional material becomes a fundamental companion in one’s research endeavors. The advent and use of new technologies, a prevalent trend in 21st century society, has created increasing awareness of the need to incorporate the grey alongside the white, a boundary that is becoming less distinct and which may become translucent in the not-too-distant future.” (Vaska, 2010) Centralized collecting grey literature started more than thirty years ago. During period 1980 - 2005 non-profit network EAGLE (European Association for Grey Literature Exploitation) created for the acquisition, identification and dissemination of grey literature SIGLE (System for Information on Grey Literature in Europe) database. Nowadays the GreyNet International is a leading organization in dialog, research, and communication between persons and organizations in the field of grey literature. Central access to grey literature is provided by OpenGrey database. OpenGrey is a unique repository providing open access to European grey literature references. OpenGrey is based on the OpenSIGLE/SIGLE database which contains almost 700 thousand records of grey literature. As a multidisciplinary database it covers Science, Technology, Biomedical Science, Economics, Social Science and Humanities. National Repository of Grey Literature will be introduced during the workshop as an example of grey literature on national level.

OpenGrey = nová OpenSIGLE

OpenGrey vznikla na základě databáze OpenSIGLE/SIGLE a obsahuje téměř 700 tisíc záznamů šedé literatury. OpenGrey je unikátní bází, zajišťující otevřený přístup k referencím o evropské šedé literatuře. Tato multidisciplinární databáze pokrývá především technické, biomedicínské, ekonomické, sociální a humanitní vědy. V prezentaci bude představeno nové vyhledávací prostředí, desing a vize. Bude zmíněna také spolupráce s mezinárodní společností GreyNet, díky níž jsou v OpenGrey zpřístupněny preprinty z řady mezinárodní konferencí o šedé literatuře. Statistiky využívanosti OpenGrey a zpětná vazba podporují naši snahu, aby bylo více šedé literatury v repozitářích. Jako příklad představíme spolupráci s Národním úložištěm šedé literatury v České republice.

OpenGrey

OpenGrey je unikátní bází, zajišťující otevřený přístup k referencím o evropské šedé literatuře. OpenGrey vznikla na základě databáze OpenSIGLE/SIGLE a obsahuje téměř 700 tisíc záznamů šedé literatury. Předmětem této multidisciplinární databáze jsou především technické, biomedicínské, ekonomické, sociální a humanitní vědy. V prezentaci bude představeno nové vyhledávací a grafické prostředí, logo a vize. Bude zmíněna také spolupráce s mezinárodní společností GreyNet, díky níž jsou v OpenGrey zpřístupněny preprinty z řady mezinárodních konferencí o šedé literatuře. Model spolupráce představíme na příkladu Národního úložiště šedé literatury v České republice.

OpenGrey - how it works and how it is used

OpenGrey je unikátní úložiště poskytující otevřený přístup k odkazům evropské šedé literatury a je výsledkem 25 let spolupráce. Příspěvek bude zaměřen na funkce nové webové stránky, nástupce OpenSIGLE, a bude informovat o zkušenostech z převodu metadat mezi platformami. Uživatelské statistiky OpenGrey a zpětná vazba budou využívány se záměrem prosazovat více šedé literatury v repozitářích.

Národní úložiště šedé literatury - třetí rok řešení

The aim of this contribution is to inform the reader about the progress of building the National Repository of Grey Literature, a project now in its in third year. The project’s aim is to describe the most important tasks of 2010, including cooperation with international activities in the grey literature field. The main part of the contribution will concentrate on a software solution and partnership network, which will be presented in detail in subsequent contributions of these conference proceedings. In the end, we produced a book entitled, Grey Literature Repositories, which was presented at the 12th International Conference of Grey Literature, along with OpenGrey, a new platform for the European system of grey literature .
